What Are Prod Keys?

Prod keys — short for production keys — are cryptographic decryption keys extracted from a Nintendo Switch console. They are stored in a file called prod.keys and are required by all major Nintendo Switch emulators to decrypt and run encrypted game files.

Without valid prod keys, emulators like Suyu, Ryujinx, Yuzu, and Eden cannot read encrypted NSP or XCI game files. The emulator may launch, but it will display errors such as “Missing prod.keys,” “Failed to decrypt NCA,” or simply refuse to boot any game.

Every Nintendo Switch game, firmware update, DLC pack, and system archive is encrypted before distribution. The prod.keys file contains the master keys and derived keys needed to unlock this encryption layer. Think of it as the master keycard that grants the emulator access to the entire Switch software ecosystem.

How Prod Keys Work

When you launch a Nintendo Switch game in an emulator, the following process happens:

  1. The emulator reads the prod.keys file from its keys directory
  2. It uses the master keys within to derive title-specific decryption keys
  3. These derived keys decrypt the NCA (Nintendo Content Archive) files inside the game
  4. The decrypted content is then passed to the emulator’s CPU and GPU recompilers for execution

This entire process happens in milliseconds every time you boot a game. Without the correct keys at step one, nothing beyond that point works.

Prod keys are version-specific. Each Nintendo Switch firmware release (v16.1.0, v17.0.0, v18.0.0, v19.0.0, v20.0.0, v21.0.0, v22.0.0, v22.1.0, etc.) introduces new cryptographic revisions. A prod.keys file from an older firmware cannot decrypt games encrypted with newer keys. This is why keeping your prod keys updated is essential for playing the latest Switch titles.

Which Emulators Need Prod Keys?

All modern Nintendo Switch emulators require prod keys. The same prod.keys file works across all of them — you do not need separate keys per emulator:

The difference between emulators is not the keys themselves, but where each expects the prod.keys file to be placed.

Prod Keys vs Title Keys

While prod keys contain the master cryptographic material, title keys are per-game encryption keys. Some digital eShop titles require a separate title.keys file alongside prod.keys. See our full comparison: Prod Keys vs Title Keys.

How to Install Prod Keys

Installing prod keys is straightforward:

  1. Download the latest prod.keys file
  2. Place it in your emulator’s keys directory
  3. Restart the emulator
