Ryujinx Firmware Guide

Ryujinx requires both prod keys and the matching Nintendo Switch firmware to play most commercial games. This guide covers everything about Ryujinx firmware — where to download it, how to install it, and which firmware version you need for your games.

Do You Need Firmware for Ryujinx?

Yes — most commercial Nintendo Switch games require the console firmware to run in Ryujinx. The firmware provides system libraries (sysmodules) that games depend on. Without the correct firmware, many games will fail to boot or crash at the title screen.

The firmware works together with your prod.keys file. You need both. Download prod keys from our prod keys download page.

Which Firmware Version Do You Need?

As a general rule:

  • Use the latest firmware (v22.1.0) for the widest game compatibility
  • Match firmware to prod keys — if you are using prod keys v22.1.0, use firmware v22.1.0
  • Older firmware works for older games — firmware is backwards compatible, but newer games may require newer firmware

See our full firmware guide for detailed version compatibility information.

How to Install Ryujinx Firmware

Windows & macOS & Linux

  1. Download the Nintendo Switch firmware file (comes as a .zip or .xci file)
  2. Open Ryujinx and go to File > Open Firmware Directory (or Tools > Install Firmware on older versions)
  3. Select the firmware file you downloaded
  4. Ryujinx will extract and install the firmware automatically
  5. Restart Ryujinx — your games should now boot

Ryujinx Firmware and Prod Keys

Both components are essential:

  • Prod keys (prod.keys) — decrypt game files. Get them from our download page.
  • Firmware (system files) — provides system libraries for games to run

Always use matching versions. Keys version v22.1.0 works with firmware v22.1.0 and all older firmware versions.

Common Ryujinx Firmware Errors

  • “Firmware not found” — You have not installed any firmware. Follow the install steps above.
  • “Firmware version mismatch” — Your firmware is too old for the game. Update to v22.1.0.
  • “Decryption keys missing” — Your prod.keys file is missing or outdated. Visit our download page.
  • Game crashes on launch — Try updating both prod keys and firmware to the latest versions.
