Prod Keys vs Title Keys
If you are new to Nintendo Switch emulation, you have likely seen references to both prod keys and title keys. While they work together, they serve different purposes in the decryption process.
What Are Prod Keys?
Prod keys (production keys) are the master cryptographic keys extracted from a Nintendo Switch console. They contain the foundational key material that emulators use to decrypt the Switch’s encryption layer. The prod.keys file includes master keys, derived keys, and key area keys needed to unlock the entire encryption system.

What Are Title Keys?
Title keys are per-game encryption keys stored in a title.keys file. Each Nintendo Switch game has a unique title key that the console uses to decrypt that specific title. While prod keys unlock the system-level encryption, title keys unlock individual game files.
In modern emulator builds, most title keys are embedded within or derived from the prod.keys file automatically. However, certain digital eShop titles — particularly older games and specific DLC packs — may require a separate title.keys file for proper decryption.

Do You Need Both?
In most cases, prod keys alone are sufficient for playing the majority of Nintendo Switch games. The emulator can derive the necessary title keys from the master keys in prod.keys. However, keeping both prod.keys and title.keys in your emulator’s keys directory ensures maximum compatibility across all games, updates, and DLC.
